Gee’s Bend quilter featured at Gallery 905

Acclaimed Gee’s Bend quilter Cathy Mooney will debut her first solo exhibition, Stitched Up, at Gallery 905 in Selma on Thursday, June 5 at 5:30 p.m. The opening reception is free and open to the public. The exhibition is curated by Paul Barrett and proudly sponsored by The St. James Hotel. Mooney, born and raised in Gee’s Bend, learned to quilt from her mother and grandmothers using repurposed cotton fabrics and blends. Her style reflects both traditional patterns and emotionally driven improvisations, passed down through generations. In 2006, a quilt by her grandmother Lottie Mooney was featured on a U.S. postage stamp.

In recent years, Cathy has collaborated with international fashion brands including Adidas, Greg Lauren, and Marfa Stance, and her work has been featured in exhibitions across the South—including the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville and the Birmingham Public Library. “This exhibition is a celebration of legacy, creativity, and connection,” said Mooney. “I’m honored to share my story and the tradition of Gee’s Bend quilts in a space as beautiful and welcoming as Gallery 905.” The exhibition featuring the Gee’s Bend quilter is part of ArtsRevive’s mission to showcase Southern artists and promote cultural heritage through visual arts.
